This was my first adventure back in 2005. Jeff and Joe invited me to climb Mt. Adams with them, of course, I was game. When I committed to it I didn't do the best job planning. I had a track that Friday night so wasn't able to leave Burlington until around 9 pm or so. Needless to say, it is a drive and a half to Adams. Along the road I got lost, nearly ran out of gas and began realizing that the sleepmonster is real. Finally, at about 2 am I get to the campsite, get about 3 hours of sleep before I hear a knock on the window of my 'ru'.
After a big yawn and stretch I start the car up to generate some heat (I was freezing), then I realized I was still extremely low on gas so I opted to be could while I got dressed. Breakfast consisted of bananas, instant oatmeal and some coffee.
We started the climb and I was feeling great, I had already decided that I was going to be the first to the top. As the day went on, I began wondering, "Is there a top to this thing?" We saw a great view of Mt. St. Helens and paused a minute to enjoy the panaramic view. We approaching the lunch counter and boy was I hungry. We ate a quick lunch, readjusted our packs, strapped on our crampons and started up the false summit. It was right around this time that the weather began to shift and I began feeling a bit quezzy. We pushed on until we decided to turn back, just missing the summit by about 1,000' or so (sorry Jeff).
What an adventure, I realized this day that adventure like this weren't sprints, they're marathons. "Slow and steady, gets you ready"
